This is what makes Shanghai special: You will find loads of street markets anywhere and offering anything, starting from food, animals, clothes, plants or tools. I went to the Fish, Insect and Bird Market which is a bit hard to find, especially when you cannot speak Chinese. Luckily my friend was around and showed us where exactly it is, at Lioxamen station.
Some stores are like pet shops with insects you can hear from far away, the crickets.
What you can find are very sweet animals like birds, rabbits, fish, turtles, but also insects in all sizes and colours and these cuties, larva.
The fabric market is basically a street packed with clothes, silk especially is a big thing in China. If you negotiate well, you can get it for very cheap. The quality is not too bad too.
Besides that, the local supermarkets can be adventurous too.
Just go inside and have a look at their snacks. You will mainly find dried fish, octopus and chicken feet. Yumm! What you will hardly see is bread and proper sweet chocolate! It is always exciting getting something with Chinese writing on and trying it out. Usually you end up not finishing it, cos the packaging looks better than it actually tastes!
The variety of fruits they have in China is also impressive.
This for example looks like a mango, but tastes very different. I cannot describe how it tastes, just try it out once you are there.
